The Appleton International Airport, ATW, is located in Greenville, Wisconsin. It’s a small airport, and I don’t believe there are more than 10 gates. I’ve been through here at least 10 separate times, if not more. Since around 2012 or so, and more than once a year whenever I live in the Valley. From elementary school age to career age, I’ve taken many flights that start or end here. There is actually quite a range, despite how small the airport is. Therefore, I feel it appropriate to review some things you should know or want to know about the place.
Security
TSA is usually quite quick here! I don’t recall having to separate every electronics like at some airports. I think they even keep them in your bag. The line is rarely very long, if there’s even a line at all. And the agents are as nice as any other you’d meet. Get in line, put your belts and externals in a bin or two, put your bags on the belt. Then, get scanned, wait a second, and get out of there. Pretty typical stuff.
Food
There are three service food places here, and a few small stalls in the terminals. The first past security is Central Kitchen & Bar (menu linked). I usually get something small here, since I often travel early in the morning. The coffee is good, the muffins and other baked goods are good, and there’s actually a good variety of other items. I’d go here for the coffee rather than the coffee machine that’s off to the other side of the walkway.
The second two notable places I have unfortunately never experienced. There is a Fratello’s Craft Kitchen & Bar and a Biergarten. Fratello’s is a riverfront restaurant in Appleton that expanded to put a place in ATW not too long ago. The Biergarten is entirely its own thing. Fratello’s was a bit on the expensive side last time I looked at the menu. However, I’m sure I’ll try it when I get the chance. The Biergarten has a wide variety of drinks, including some local ones. Obviously I have to mention Spotted Cow if I mention any- they’re a staple in the area. If you give either of these a try, let me know how they are!
Conclusion
I’m not certain whether I ever “like” an airport, given they’re a means rather than a goal. As I’ve stated before, though, I like to try to enjoy my time in one. ATW is a fantastic example of how to do an airport right. Including their bathrooms; they’re way better than, say, O’Hare. The (as of writing this) recent additions make for a good, well rounded experience.
